Chapter History

The SMPS Utah Chapter was launched as an official chapter of SMPS National in September of 1990 under the direction of Dana French and Stephanie Craft. At the time, there were few national guidelines for chapter incorporation. Although the process was lengthy and cumbersome, the ambition and foresight of these women led to the creation of a vibrant and valuable organization for marketers in the architecture, engineering and construction industries.

Dana French came to Salt Lake City from the Dallas area where she had been active in the SMPS Chapter. Under her guidance as the first Utah Chapter President, by-laws were established and membership quickly grew. Regular speaker luncheons were held in the Utah One Building and within two years elections were held for a Board of Directors. Marianne Cook Jenks and Stephanie Craft followed as Chapter Presidents, establishing the first policies and procedures for the new organization. Stephanie Craft was recognized as SMPS National’s “President of the Year” for her work in developing the Utah Chapter.

In 1994 the first Special Event was held: an auction for charity. Many members and friends gave of their time and talents to make this an event that joined the membership in a unique way apart from their business association.

Since 1994 the Chapter has grown to 79 members and 130 associated friends. Along with monthly speaker luncheons, chapter activities include education workshops, a Marketing Communications Award, special events such as Holiday Socials, an Annual Golf Tournament and an annual Speakers Breakfast/Ski Day.
